If you're new to the life of a military spouse, and you're preparing for your first Permanent Change of Station move, you might not be prepared for all of the work that goes into it. Here are four tips that will help you through your first experience with a PCS move.
Make Friends with Your Camera
Before you start packing your belongings, take the time to document everything you own. Go room to room and take as many pictures as possible. This will allow you to identify anything that ends up missing or damaged. If you have electronic equipment, take a blank sheet of paper and write down each individual serial number. Place the sheet of paper in front of the equipment and take a picture. This will document the equipment and the serial number.
Take Your Keepsakes with You
If you have items that are not replaceable, such as small mementos, keep them with you. Keeping them with you will ensure that they don't get lost or damaged during the move. This should include family pictures or other items that would devastate you to lose. Keep in mind that it's also a good idea to keep all of your important documents with you, as well. You're going to need your birth certificates and other documents when you get to your new base. If you arrive before your belongings are delivered, having your documents with you will speed up the in-processing.
Don't Seal the Boxes
If you're going to be taking care of your own packing, don't seal the boxes before the movers arrive. Leaving the boxes open will allow the movers to document the condition of the items they'll be moving. This is particularly important if the moving company will be insuring your belongings against damage or loss during transport. Once the movers have inspected each of the boxes, they'll seal them up and document that everything was in good condition when they took possession of your belongings.
Label Your Boxes
Once you have everything packed, take the time to label each of the boxes. Place your name, phone number and new address on each label. This will allow your boxes to be easily identified during transport. It's also a good idea to place a content list on each box. This will help your movers place the boxes in the proper rooms once your belongings are delivered to your new home.
